The Superiority of Homemade Tomato Sauce Over the Store-Bought One

Tomato sauce is a base for loads of dishes as most pizzas, many kinds of pasta and some soups require it. That's why it is one of the basic ingredients you can probably find in pantries in most homes. Of course, there is an extensive selection of store-bought sauces, and it is no crime to use them! However, if you make it at home, you have complete control over the ingredients and their quality. And its preparation is easy and straightforward.

Tomato Sauce Making

You can make it with fresh tomatoes. But if it is not the right season, you can easily replace fresh tomatoes with canned ones without worrying too much about losing nutrients. Tomatoes are probably the only produce that becomes more nutritious with cooking. Of course, heat lowers Vitamin C content, but it increases the lycopene. This carotenoid (which gives colour to tomatoes) has antioxidant properties. And it is supposed to prevent prostate and breast cancer which makes it very good for all of us.

Apart from tomatoes, you will also need some basic ingredients like onion, garlic and olive oil. And then herbs. You can choose between fresh basil, thyme, oregano, chilli; you could also use dried versions. Everything depends on the content of your spices' drawer, imagination and flavor you want to achieve.

How to Make Tomato Sauce?

To prepare the sauce, you will have to follow a few simple steps. You should fry the onion and garlic gently at first, add the rest of the ingredients, and simmer for several minutes. If there is too much juice/liquid, you can switch to medium-high heat and carry on cooking until you have a thicker sauce. If you don't like chunky sauce, you can use a blender or a food processor to make it smoother.
